Insider’s Scoop: Stockholm Furniture Fair

Feb 05, 2011 By Lydia Parafianowicz

This year marks the 60th anniversary of The Stockholm Furniture Fair, which is less than a few days away, from 7 to 13 February. We’ve done the legwork to find out the who’s who of designers presenting this year.

The 2011 fair will welcome a new Light Bar, where Alexander Lervik's ‘Dimension’ installation will be shown. The sculpture consists of 1728 heads, half men and half women, symbolizing employees of Skandia – the company that commissioned the sculpture for their head offices. Each head is separately controlled with LED lights that form a 3D screen.

London-based designer Timothy Schreiber will show a new Plooop chair, which is following the launch of the Plooop armchair in London last year. The new chair features fluid lines made of a unique triple looped plywood.

We’ll also catch a glimpse of Scholten & Baijings new collection for Hay and Artek's New Pesepectives series. Berga Form will be launching their sleek outdoor furniture as well, called Matilda. The collection was designed by Mårten Claesson, who says he was tired of seeing tired-looking plastic furniture cluttering decks around his cottage.

Meanwhile, Swedish greats Claesson Koivisto Rune will present 14 new products, from vases and paper lamps to carpets and potted plant tables. The items have been made in collaboration with companies like Offecct, Mabeo and Asplund.

Jaime Hayon will present the Sé Collection II; this is the first complete range of furniture he has designed for Sé, which produces items by artisan craftspeople across France.

It’s only been three years since Jens Fager started showing his collections; now, he will be designing Greenhouse – the fair’s hall for independent designers and design schools. “The setting is based on the visual aspect of the circus world with its strong, graphic coloured fields, humour, naivety and a touch of craziness,’ Fager says.

Also launching is the new Twist lamp by young Norwegian label Tveit & Tornoe. It is being manufactured by Northern Lighting, who have launched a number of new lamps in recent months.

Finally, the DFTS Factory will present their second product release – the Last Ashtray by Richard Hutten of The Netherlands, and the floor lamp Cap (illuminated) by Don’t Feed the Swedes. Their DFTS Factory has created a pop-in store for the exhibit, located in central Stockholm.
